For me flowers signify moments, special dates, treasured parts of your garden, times of the year, and even important people - all these things trigger memories. To suggest this I paint flowers fading in and out of detail just as our thoughts, creating elements on each canvas to discover and savour, using colour to allow the eyes to gently search the canvas at their own pace.

I find myself drawn to folds. I love their simplicity to create and the beauty of the lines and shadows that combine and are both of importance.

Using Multiples golf tees

Using golf tee multiples.

Here I have used golf tees to create organic shapes.

I chose to use golf tees to create a series of sculptures about being in the rough.

In golf:

When your golf ball is in the rough you are in some form of trouble, the next decision you make is extremely important.
You need to evaluate the lie in the rough properly otherwise you will ultimately compound your initial mistake.
Your main goal should be to play the highest-percentage shot based on your lie, and return your ball back to safety.

The sculptures are a visual metaphor of recovering from mistakes.

Some interesting terms used to describe the lie of the ball when in the rough:

The In-Between Lie
The Fluffy Lie

Other multiples I have sculpted with are:

Venice Biennial The Four Horses

Venice Biennial The Four Horses

The Four Horses has been selected to be exhibited at the Venice Biennial 2021. It was initially selected for 2020 but the show was cancelled due to covid. The horses are digitally distorted, straining and tortured, to suggest they are in battle.

I play chess, I enjoy the strategic thinking. I played as a young boy and played for the school in a chess competition, travelling from Manchester to London, at ten years of age.

I am working with bronze foundry to create different combinations of the horses which I hope to exhibit in London.

Another chess link is that I was also invited to hand-paint one of Purling London Art Chess Sets.

Bronze sculpture - Empathy

With this sculpture I wanted to express how at times we all need to be held up or supported. I wanted to create a sculpture that expressed that empathy. I initially created this work in ceramic. I was particularly happy with the form and the weight ambiguous weight distribution between the two figures and decided to have the work 3D scanned so that it could be translated into bronze. Bronze seemed appropriate for the importance of empathy especially in the current times.

These sculptures are LoveChess - in support of diversity. Creating iconic silhouettes, pairs of chess pieces depicting KingQueen, QueenQueen, KingKing (KQ,QQ,KK). The sculptures were selected to be exhibited at D-Contemporary, Mayfair for the prestigious exhibition 'The Art of Being Out'. The sculptures are water-jet cut granite.

Beginning.

This work began with looking at my beginning - my hidden identification as an identical twin. As a surviving twin this is something that you would not know about me.

My twin brother died at six months old. My mother said I looked for him, as we had always been together.

I sometimes think how different life would have been if my brother had survived and we had grown up together with a twin connection.

I have used underfloor insulation as a sculptural material - folding, cutting, heating to create a variety of sculptures. The use of the material to create garments played with the function of the material to insulate and the idea of garment as armour.

Utilised the stripe to drape over a steel form then carefully hand-cutting the vinyl flooring at varying angles and widths to sculpturally glitch the surface.

This sculpture was exhibited at the Truman Brewery, London for FLUX.

Sculptural Installation

I have used laser-cut mirrored perspex both indoor in gallery situation which literally captured the viewers gaze and ephemeral outdoor sculpture in a park where the mirrors soaked up the environment and was preserved in photography. The mirrors appeared to glitch the environment.

This work was further developed by capturing on film which was digitally glitched and was selected by curators from TATE and V&A to exhibit at Mozfest in London.

Intricacy

Intricacy is the quality of being intricate. It's in the details, especially of an involved or perplexing subject. It is related to complexity, complication, elaborateness, difficulty, confusion, simple, elaboration, involution, minutia, nuance and ins-and-outs. This series of paintings plays with elaborate details, creating a painting where you can search the surface for your favourite detailed section. The colour is arranged carefully creating a microscopic scape so that it encourages the viewers eye to gently roam around the surface, rather than dart. To search the layers for what you see.

Cerebral Bloom

Cerebral Bloom is the name I give to a series of paintings inspired by my mum. My mum was a dressmaker as I grew up, she made ballroom and latin dresses for dancers. My mum had a stroke followed months later by a brain haemorrhage. She survived. But for a couple of years she lost her ability to create. She had always knitted to relax and she couldn't do it anymore. In between her stroke and brain haemorrhage my dad died of bowel cancer 6 months after his diagnosis. My mum and dad had lived in the same house for over 50 years and following my dads death and her recovering slowly from the brain haemorrhage I struggled to think of how she could cope surrounded by memories. I came up with an idea for her to press flowers. She loved her garden. I wanted to think that the search for a beautiful flower to press would give her some distraction and comfort. My mum slowly recovered. Two years later she presented me with the flowers she had pressed. The need for creativity which I share with my mum and was seen so profoundly when she lost her abilities made a big impact on me. Wonderfully my courageous mum recovered her talents and can knit again now.

The Cerebral Bloom paintings are created using pressed flowers, inspired by my mum, and painting with permanent ink on canvas, selecting colours intuitively to lead the eye around the canvas capturing the detail by carefully bleeding the ink. The process takes a certainty and decision before applying the ink to the canvas as it can't be undone. I choose bright colours that for me express joy and captures the beauty of the flowers. The layers create movement and depth.

Selected by Artful to Exhibit at Berkeley Square House, Mayfair

I was invited by curator ARTFUL to create two sculptures to be exhibited in prestigious London location. Inspired by a short story by Oscar Wilde 'The Rose and the Nightingale'. It was created onsite in the foyer of Berkeley Square House, Mayfair. It is created with laser-cut thorn rose stems threaded and climbing. The sculpture overlooked the trees in Berkeley Square Park and also the beautiful sculpture 'The Sun' by glass sculptor Dale Chihuly.

Exhibiting at Berkeley Square House, Mayfair

I created this sculpture to be exhibited in prestigious London location after being invited by ARTFUL. The location was to be Berkeley Square House. Inspired by the location chosen I used a song that has long been associated with Berkeley Square - A Nightingale sang in Berkeley Square. I called the sculpture 'A Nightingale Sings''. It was created onsite in the foyer of Berkeley Square House, Mayfair. It is created by hand-cutting vinyl flooring so that it is able to be draped over a steel form and then cut into further. The marble vinyl finish sitting alongside the real marble foyer. The sculpture overlooked the trees in Berkeley Square Gardens.

PlaceMatters @ The House of St Barnabas, Soho

I was selected by Katie Keller, curator PATCH London, to create a site-specific sculpture for their prestigious show 'The Collective'. My proposal was to create a sculpture in the garden using the wooden pagoda as a plinth. The work was created out of laser-cut fluorescent perspex. The sculpture as called 'PlaceMatters' and responded to the House of St Barnabas mission statement ' Aim high and go on an amazing journey '.

After responding to a national call from arts organisation rednile for factory nights, I was selected for Factory Night @ The Historic Wedgwood Institute, Stoke-on-Trent (Oct 2011)

Factory Nights are an innovative new approach to commissioning art work and inspiring collaboration, with unique opportunities for attendees to apply for bursaries to conduct research residencies, collaborations or produce a piece of work responding to the space. Open to all artists, creatives and potters from studio, design and industry. Open to artists throughout the UK - only 10 places.

The historic Wedgwood Institute in Burslem, Stoke on Trent has been named by the Victorian Society as one of the top 10 buildings in the UK under threat. The grade II* Listed Institute was built with funds raised by public subscription to make arts, science and literature available to all and was named after the iconic potter Josiah Wedgwood. This Factory Night is in partnership with the British Ceramics Biennial and aims to bring together a wide range of artists and potters from studio, design and industry to exchange and share skills. The night includes a guided tour of the property and includes access to the exhibition hall and balcony, the hidden original house that the institute was built around and the university lecture theatre. The night will be led by noted local historian and Sentinel Columnist Fred Hughes along with town centre manager Julian Read providing both past, current and future debate.

I was awarded two commissions by rednile projects in partnership with British Ceramics Biennial for two collaborative residencies with Sun Ae Kim (Ceramic Artist), Holly Corfield-Carr (writer) and David Booth (sculptor) in 2011 and 2012.

This Sculptural Installation is called 'Sometimes You Don't See'. It is created by hand-cutting vinyl flooring so that it is able to be draped over a steel form and then cut into further. It creates an effusive sculpture, an erupting from the ground in fluid paths. The work is to suggest that something which should be as stable as a floor - an expected flat space - can be hiding a struggle, a need to escape. Again using a transformative way of using a material.

I was invited to create a sculpture for PINT Arts Festival in Burton-upon-Trent. The location of the sculpture was to be at The Brewhouse which is an art centre and theatre in the heart of the town famous for breweries. I proposed to create a sculpture called 'Pub Crawl' out of 100000 beermats. The sculpture was sponsored by Marston's Pedigree who provided the beer mats.

Reinvention, Escapism

Noticing that I was drawn to reinvent perception of a material by how I used it; that I was drawn to make organic forms that visually travelled and escaped. The link to me is how I felt not working in a creative field for most of my working life. That you can feel like a fish in a bowl - able to swim but stifled. I think that is why I am drawn to make work that escapes.

The work below is created by weaving 'mount-board frames' on aluminium forms that creates sculpture that has momentum. The lower pictures are using stained glass collage projected onto the mounts. This work was displayed in a church.

Folded: Repetition, Distraction, Comfort.

This work was a development from my acknowledgement that the simple action of completing a fold and repeating it was a distraction and a comfort. A form of mindfulness.

This investigation followed on from my sculpture for Broomhill where I used the simplicity and organic nature of the fold. Noticing as you can use the variation between folds to make the viewers eye travel over the work.

I was also drawn to the minute differences between the seemingly identical and found myself deliberately creating this.

Curated Commission

I was very proud to be awarded the curated commission for Wirksworth Arts Festival. The work celebrated the nature of Wirksworth over the centuries of seemingly reinventing itself and today was a thriving creative town. To celebrate this the work was created out of 45,000 balloons and the proportions of the three colours of balloons used referenced the pie chart of the population census figures for 1801, 1901, 2001. The balloons were reinvented - not blown up as would be expected but individually skewed and threaded on steel and impossibly floated in organic forms from the bell tower of St Mary's Church, Wirksworth.

The work was a fantastic insight into producing and delivering proposal for site specific work, understanding the limits that can mean restrictions to form but work with them to make work where the viewer is unaware of the restrictions.

Broomhill National Sculpture Prize

National recognition

In 2008 I entered the prestigious call from Artists Newsletter www.a-n.co.uk for a national call for artists from all over the country to apply for the Broomhill National Sculpture Prize. The call was to submit your design, concept and maquette for a sculpture. Ten finalists would be picked and would be awarded the commission to realise their sculptures and exhibit for the year at Broomhill in Devon. I sketched out my design, made my maquette and sent off my application feeling pleased that I had managed to do so before the deadline. Then waited. I was honoured when I was announced as one of the chosen finalists and commissioned to produce my sculpture.

This was a fantastic experience - producing, delivering, installing sculpture across the country. The work was well received and came joint 3rd in the public vote.

AboutMe

I was born in 1963, an identical twin. My brother was called Mark. Sadly my brother died at 6 months old. I was an artistic child and loved drawing and painting. At 17 I got a place at Art College but was encouraged to take an apprenticeship at BT. Later in life I returned to art at night school and my tutor suggested I applied to university to study Fine Art. At this time I did not know it was an option as I had a full-time job. However I applied and got a place in 2006 at Derby University to study Fine Art part-time over 6 years. Having got a second chance to have an art career I grabbed it. I managed to work 37hrs a week and study - completing my part-time course ahead of time in 5 years. Whilst studying I applied for the Broomhill National Sculpture Prize and submitted my design and maquette for a sculpture. I was awarded one of ten commissions to produce my sculpture and exhibit at Broomhill. I was awarded joint 3rd prize in the public vote. The next year I was awarded the Derby Open Sculpture Prize and the year after that I was awarded the curated commission for Wirksworth Arts Festival. Then in 2011 I graduated with FINE ART BA(Hons) 2.1

This gives a bit of an insight on why I am so driven to pursue my artistic practice.
